Background of the Study

Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is a management approach aimed at improving organizational efficiency by redesigning workflows, eliminating redundancies, and leveraging technology (Hammer & Champy, 2024). Banks that implement BPR experience improved customer service, reduced operational costs, and enhanced productivity. Ecobank Nigeria has undertaken several BPR initiatives, including digital banking transformation, automated loan processing, and customer relationship management upgrades.

In Kwara State, where banking services cater to a mix of urban and rural populations, BPR efforts must align with customer needs and regulatory requirements. However, the impact of these efforts on banking efficiency remains uncertain, prompting this study to evaluate the effectiveness of BPR strategies at Ecobank Nigeria, Kwara State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of BPR, many organizations struggle with implementation challenges, including employee resistance, technological bottlenecks, and high transition costs. Ecobank Nigeria has faced issues related to system downtimes, long transaction processing times, and customer dissatisfaction (Aliyu, 2023). Understanding the extent to which BPR initiatives have improved operational efficiency is crucial for enhancing banking services.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the business process reengineering strategies implemented at Ecobank Nigeria, Kwara State.
  2. To assess the impact of BPR on banking efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  3. To identify challenges associated with BPR implementation in the bank.

Research Questions

  1. What BPR strategies has Ecobank Nigeria implemented in Kwara State?
  2. How has BPR affected banking efficiency and service delivery?
  3. What challenges affect the successful implementation of BPR?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Business Process Reengineering significantly improves banking efficiency.
  2. Poor implementation of BPR leads to operational disruptions and inefficiencies.
  3. Employee resistance negatively affects the success of BPR initiatives.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on BPR implementation at Ecobank Nigeria, Kwara State, from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include variations in banking regulations and customer adoption of new processes.

Definitions of Terms

  • Business Process Reengineering (BPR): The fundamental redesign of business processes to improve efficiency.
  • Banking Efficiency: The ability of a bank to deliver services effectively while minimizing costs.
  • Customer Satisfaction: The level of service quality experienced by bank customers.
